Bulk Soap Contamination Presents An Unnecessary Risk To Military Personnel

Dispenser

The primary focus of today’s military personnel is to stay healthy and mission ready. But something as simple as taking a shower or washing hands could be putting their health at risk. Instead of washing away germs, they could be adding millions of fecal-based germs on to their hands and bodies if they use soap from an open refillable dispenser.

According to studies by the University of Arizona under the direction of Dr. Charles P. Gerba, 23 to 25 % of samples taken from open refillable bulk soap reservoir dispensers were contaminated with unsafe levels of bacteria. Coliforms, illness causing fecal-based organisms, were found in 16 to 22% of the samples

Although young people and those who are immunocompromised are at greater risk of developing infections from the bacteria found in contaminated open refillable bulk soap dispensers, healthy individuals could also be at risk, especially if they have abrasions or open cuts or wounds. Because of the rigors of military life, abrasions or open cuts or wounds are likely to occur.

According to Dr. Gerba, the only safe solution to the risks of open refillable bulk soap reservoir dispensers is to use sealed systems. The studies showed that no pathogens were found in soap collected from sealed systems.1
